Summary
"What of your other vices, then?" he asks, managing to make eye contact again, flicking his eyes quickly to the pout of Artemy's lip and back up. "Any of them outstayed their welcome?"
Artemy inhales sharply. "No," he says, keeping his eyes on Daniil's. They're light, betraying the way his pupils have widened in the dimness of the bar. "No, rather the opposite."
"You've been left wanting," Daniil chances. It's a risk.
He watches Artemy's throat work through a swallow and knows it paid off. "I have."

Summary
“You don’t look like they’ve been mistreating you too grievously, at least,” the strange woman said. “Aside from the obvious.”
There was something of the university, too, in how she said it, airy and self-satisfied, with a capital accent even stronger than the sooty smell that clung to her coat. A new arrival in the town, yet she stood there as if she owned the jail and talked almost as if Artemis should have known her on sight.
“Who are you?” Artemis asked. Her thoughts, time, still didn’t seem to be moving much quicker than the trickle of water down the wall, cold and puddling. With someone like that standing in its doorway, the cell could almost have been a dream after all.
“Dana Dankovskaya, Bachelor of Medicine,” she introduced herself, with a little tug of the lips that said she liked doing it. Liked flaunting the title, maybe – a university woman after all, and what was someone like that doing in a little town on the edge of the steppe? “And apparently the most competent criminal investigator in this town. I was able to convince Governor Saburov that the timing of your arrival makes it absolutely impossible for you to have killed your father.”

Summary
Resources, though abundant now, would inevitably run out. The plague had taught this to Daniil. A lesson he would have never learned in the Capital, for better or worse. Abundance had come to the town in the plague's aftermath, but he couldn't seem to accept it. All he could see was lack.
But there were theories of another way to care for the sick and suffering. No pills. No morphine. Research pursued to determine the true power of persuasion, of the voice over the mind. With his guilt looming over him, the strange technique of hypnotism intrigues Daniil.
And anything that intrigues Daniil, intrigues Artemy.

Summary
"Have you ever heard of homosexuality?" Dankovsky asks, a confident non-sequitor.
The breath gets seized out of Artemy's lungs.
"'Homo', in this case meaning 'of the same'," Dankovsky continues as if he didn't just yank Artemy's arm out of its socket with his words – or push it into place, rather? "Homogeneous, homologous, homomorphous – "
"We're opposites," Artemy chokes out. "Didn't you say?"

Summary
To Daniil's shock, Artemy instantly blushed redder than the bloody twyre, all the way from the bridge of his nose across his cheeks to the tip of his ears. His eyes widened, and he glanced between the underwhelming nosegay and Daniil's face repeatedly, raising his hand to cover his mouth.
"Wh—Wow, oynon, this is... I didn't expect this from you," Artemy stammered, his tone low and almost raspy.
"Yes, well. I've learned at least some things about the Steppe, haven't I?" Daniil preened, shooting him a modest grin.
"Ah, I suppose you have, oynon... th—thank you, truly."
—
Daniil gifts Artemy herbs without realizing that he's propositioning him according to Kin tradition. Culture shock shenanigans ensue.
