She’d introduced herself, all flashy smile and sun-kissed skin, her Southern drawl dripping from her lips like honey. Toni had taken one look and immediately felt her metaphorical hackles raise. This girl, with her perfect teeth and drop-dead gorgeous eyes, felt dangerous. Something about her made Toni want to run and run and run, until the horizon caught up with her and the sunset swallowed her whole. Maybe it was her accent, or maybe it was the way her eyes had scanned her up and down, but whatever it was, it was all Toni needed to decide that she did not like Shelby Goodkind.
She didn’t like her at all.

Dot is covered in blood. Her hands, up to the elbows, the front of her shirt, her cargo pants. So much blood - it makes the ashen tint of Rachel’s skin even worse somehow, because all that blood should be inside her and not on Dot’s clothes, on her skin, in her hair. She wants to feel sick, like Fatin who threw up earlier when she got a glimpse of Rachel’s mangled wrist, but Dot just doesn’t have time for that. Sure, the wound is ugly, but no more disturbing than a hole in her father’s throat.
