Summary
There are two types of people in this world. Or at least, in Wiskayok, New Jersey.
There are the Socs - the jet set rich kids like Taissa Turner and Jackie Taylor, who have perfect houses and perfect parents and perfect little lives. They could vandalize ten buildings on the south side of town then get praised halfway to heaven in the school paper for their grades and behavior. Truly a public menace one day and an asset to society the next.
The other type is what they call Greasers. The poor kids, the trailer trash, the kids who’d steal the hubcaps off of a Soc’s Corvette then throw them like frisbees from the back of their shitty old cars just for fun. The name comes from the boys who slick their hair back with more pomade than they can justify spending their last few cents on, but even the girls from the trailer park and the run-down houses on the south side of town share it. And how lucky they are.

Wiskayok, 1966. Nat has had enough of the Socs ruining her life and is determined to wreak havoc on the town if it’s the last thing she does. That is, until a Soc drives her cherry red Corvette right into her life and flips Nat’s world upside down.

“Okay, let’s assume this is a sane idea, how would that even work?” Natalie moves to stand in front of her. “I just go up to someone and ask ‘Hey, would you want to fake date me to make my ex jealous?’. Who would even agree to that?”
Later, Lottie will blame Van and Tai for making her think of Natalie before getting to the party and then leaving her alone. Later, she will blame Shauna and Jackie for making her take shots. Later, she will blame Mari for something she's yet to come up with and hell, she’ll blame Jeff's friend too.
But for now, Lottie will open her mouth and ignore that she is to blame for being nothing other than an impulsive mess around this girl.

Nat realises what she’s about to say a second before it comes out, a week’s worth of build-up tumbling out unbidden. “I think I want to try it. You know, with a girl. Just so I can stop fucking wondering. Just so I can finally know.”
Somehow that feels even more exposing than anything else she’s said so far. God. She wants to try it out. Did she really have to word it like that? Like something she can just try on for size and then put back on the rack if she doesn’t like it or it doesn’t fit right? She wonders if Lottie will tell her to fuck off, or grow up, or—
“I could do it.”
Nat blinks. “What?”
“If you want to try a girl,” Lottie says. “If you would rather try with someone you know rather than a total stranger, I’ll do it.”
