Crowley stopped what he was doing and put the pen down, turning his opaque gaze properly to Aziraphale. His mouth was slightly open, and if Aziraphale didn’t know better, he’d say the demon looked vaguely shocked. It wasn’t an expression he could recall seeing very often on his face over the past 6,000 years.
“I don’t know,” Crowley said finally. “Though I’ve got to admit, I thought you’d know.”

Crowley felt like the first infant who had their parent hide behind their hands, except he had no knowledge of the peek-a-boo! to come. For all he knew, the voice in the sky was just a brief thing that happened to everyone.

Crowley’s legs didn’t move for a couple of seconds. The seconds felt like years. When he finally was able to move, he sprinted, stumbling over himself to reach the courtroom doors. He threw them open, and all the air in his body left him with a broken cry.

Aziraphale carried himself with dignity and grace—too much for any twenty-two year old, as far as Crowley was concerned. But he had always been like that, even when they were kids in the sandbox. Where Crowley was tall and sharp, Aziraphale was short(er) and soft. His curly hair was so blond that it looked white in certain lights, and he had the bluest eyes Crowley had ever seen. He spoke sweetly, pronouncing every syllable with careful precision as if reading from one of his favorite books, and he seldom swore.
