Per physician’s orders, Aline Dessendre was currently on bed rest. Verso flopped down beside her. He made a sound of consideration as he plucked her hand from the coverlet. “Help me settle a bet—Clea thinks you’ll last until tomorrow; I think you’ll make an escape attempt tonight. Who’s correct?”
Maman blew a strand of hair out of her eyes, shifting to lean her head against his shoulder. “You are in a rare position to tip the scales, mon ange.”
“Maman, it sounds like you are suggesting something underhanded. And I’m not opposed.”
