Daniel broke up with his longtime boyfriend.
Years passed before Max even knew who that person was. He didn't know the name. Daniel often talked about this and that during drinking sessions with Max, usually calling him over when he had an argument with or drifting apart from his boyfriend. Max couldn't get much out of the conversations, but well, it was a man not much younger than Daniel. With such vague information, there wasn't much Max could do. He could only respond to Daniel's outpourings about “him” with things like, "Yeah", or "So what do you think?".
When Daniel casually invited Max out again for drinks, he assumed he still wanted to hang out and listen to the troubles. After Max sat down and straightened his coat, Daniel dropped the bomb. "We broke up." Strangely, Daniel's face remained completely still as he didn't say anything. No emotion showed. Max didn't ask why. "Oh, I see. Yeah.", only a strange reaction. Daniel didn't seem to expect much comfort either. He didn't complain. They drank strong liquor, emptying one glass after another. That day, Max did think Daniel was drinking more than his usual limit. Still, Max kept clinking glasses with him.
