He never believed in them. Maurice’s the type of person to not believe in critters lest he sees said critters, and never in his life had he seen a mermaid; maybe because he lacked the urge to dwell near the sea, but he’s always been suspicious about the existence of so-called merfolk.
So when Bill called him on a Saturday, all excited to visit the nearby beach with him, Maurice saw the opportunity to confirm the validity of his skepticism. He thought he was right. A lot of things Maurice was right about.
