“Are you okay, hyung?” Jisung asks, resting a hand on Minho’s shoulder and rubbing slowly. “I can’t imagine putting yourself through years of that and not ending up a little screwed up in the head. Especially with a job like this, dealing with so much death and terrifying situations like we do.”
“I’m not doing drugs, if that’s what you’re asking,” Minho says instead of answering.
Jisung scoffs. “Well, me neither. But I wouldn’t judge anyone’s coping mechanisms. We do what we have to, so we can do our jobs well.”
“Hm, when did you get so wise, Firefighter Han?”
“I’ve always been wise,” Jisung says matter-of-factly. He pauses for a beat, then: “I think I’ve watched too much anime.”

Minho stares at him, his gaze heavy with that something Jisung can’t quite place. He still can’t figure it out. In the dim light of the kitchen, Minho’s dark chocolate eyes sparkle, his pupils unmoving, pinning Jisung in place.
“Go out with me.”
Jisung feels his knees go weak and grips the counter, praying his legs won’t give out now.
“W-what?”
“Go on a date with me,” Minho says, gaze unwavering.
“Why?” Jisung asks, probably sounding like an idiot.
“So I can show you how you deserve to be treated on a date,” Minho says, frowning now. “And spoil you, like you want. So you won’t settle for less than this ever again.”
Oh.
Oh, okay. A date. As friends.
Jisung can do that.
After yet another failed relationship, Jisung swears off dating for good. But Minho, his best friend and the guy he’s not in love with, won’t let him give up on love that easily.

“That’s okay.” Dr. Lee drags his knuckles down Jisung’s IT band, making his quad jump. “Feel how tight that is?”
Oh, no. Head, meet gutter.
“Yeah, it’s so—” he swallows. “So tight.”
“It’s pulling on your knee. Makes it feel like a nail gun going into your leg, right?”
“Something like that.”
“We need to loosen you up, yeah? So it won’t hurt so much.”
Jisung closes his eyes to hide how they roll up into the back of his head.

Jisung pushes past the lump in his throat, horrified by how weak his voice sounds when he speaks. “Why—why did you take me in?”
He omits the second part of it. Can’t bring himself to ask if Seungmin will walk through that door to see him having a meal with Minho. It makes him feel dirty—because he can’t fully stomp down the part of him that secretly, guiltily wishes for that to happen.
“Was I supposed to leave you to be carried away by the storm?”
On any other day, Jisung would easily answer no. Minho is kindhearted. Always has been. Even if their friendship had gone to shit, Minho wouldn’t let him suffer. He’d do that for anyone, even a stranger.
Except now Jisung thinks he’s worse than a stranger. And Minho’s eyes tell him maybe he’s regretting his decision to take him in.
