Volke pushed off the counter, the length of him something heady to behold in ebony and brocade. “Neither can I,” he admitted as the lantern light rippled down the fall of his cloak, a velvet affair that hadn’t seen daylight in years. It’d never hung right off Geoffrey’s shoulders, either the shape too narrow or himself too broad, but there was nothing amiss in the way the sleek fabric framed Volke’s figure. “Didn’t think Bastian would get you to go along.”

Summary
Stride swift, the sort of joy that would be expected painting his face, Kieran came forward suddenly enough that Oscar hadn’t the time to turn or question before he was clutched tight in an embrace far less dear than what Kieran had hoped for on the long ride from the capital. Oscar squawked, as he was apt to. The pot got jostled, a bit of broth might’ve escaped the rim, but Kieran wasn’t bothered by the fuss.
The scent of cumin and carrot was so much stronger now, an essence of such warmth and home and his man that Kieran needn’t have pretended at joy anymore. He buried his over-wide smile in Oscar’s shoulder and held him so very tight.
A hand touched his own, warm and heavy. “Hello to you too.”

Summary
His feet grow blistered beneath the swath of fabric he’s wrapped around them, his hands too, callouses grown from years of swordwork flayed and eroding in the frigid air. There are nicks all along his scalp, the aftermath of escaping the clutch of a gang of pale-eyed prisoners that are relentless in disallowing him his slumber. Hans doesn’t speak, hasn’t in days, just grunts and whimpers pathetically enough to convince the foremen of their superiority. He’s never felt less a prince, throwing elbows to manage his own nourishment, pulling hair and biting to manage what safety he can after the shifts. He rarely finds victory unharmed, his lip constantly split, bruises that swell and make him wonder the point of even rising from his rest.

Summary
Volke sat back on his heels, head tilted such that the firelight shined golden on his hair. A glow that clung to each flyaway strand and made softer the shape of his face, and even the always sharp expectation of his eyes. Expectation wasn’t the right word, not exactly, but there was something in his gaze that lately made Geoffrey feel so…lacking. So insufficient. As if that which bound them were the thinnest of strands. Mere threads that were a single sour look or hasty word from snapping apart.

Summary
Volke’s eyes are molten in the low light. Like steel smoldering in a forge. There’s uncertainty in both, in recognizing the right moment to move forward without knowing the burning bite of flame. Steel is always more predictable than this man, but this night is already over if Geoffrey doesn’t eventually dare.
He reaches.
Palm open, breath held.
That Volke does not immediately retreat is a victory all itself.
