Summary
Mel King was a creature of habit.
There was a specific sort of choreography to her life beyond the chaos of the Emergency Department. A carefully controlled routine, a color-coded calendar, a rigid set of rituals that kept her grounded enough to keep showing up day after day, to keep on doing the work that was required of her to save lives.
Everything was going fine for Mel. Her personal life was predictable, unexciting, and perfectly fulfilling, thank you very much.
Enter Frank Langdon, agent of chaos.

“We aren’t supposed to keep secrets. We’re supposed to tell each other everything.” Mel feels a prickle in her eyes, so she stares at passing clouds until the stinging stops.
“Did you tell her about your deposition?” Langdon asks.

Summary
She took a deep breath. Her lip quivered. She wanted to disappear, vanish in a poof of smoke, she imagined it, like a squid releasing ink when provoked. Poof. Black smoke. Mel’s gone. “Do you think…” Mel started, unsure how to phrase her concern out loud. “You would tell me if you thought something bad was happening. Based on what she told you.” She said. She knew that to be true, Langdon wouldn’t keep something from her if he thought Becca might be in danger. She knew that.
“If I thought something was fishy, I would’ve told you.” He agreed.
