"“Mmmnghhh… I'm cold, E…” 007n7 muttered sleepily, his arms tightening around 007e7’s neck. 007e7 hitched him up higher in response, a chuckle full of relief—and a whisk of desperation—falling out of his lips.
“I know… I know. But don't worry; I know where to go.” 007e7 answered, his legs speeding up with every step until he was basically running. It was a little difficult with 007n7 clinging to his back like a squirrel hanging by a loose branch, but he somehow managed—maybe thanks to the adrenaline, or just the sheer desperation to get to 226w6’s house as fast as possible.
Probably both.
And like a mantra, he whispered:
“Please be home… please be home… please, please, please…”
And he kept repeating it—until he didn't know how many cracks in the sidewalk he dodged, while the streetlights blurred past, arms aching, lungs burning, legs on the verge of collapsing.
But for a fleeting moment—
With 007n7’s relaxed breathing on his neck, the donut shop coming into view, and the promise of 226w6’s couch or guest room—
He wanted to think they were safe—
That everything was okay…—"
