For some reason, the last part is what sticks in Nico’s head, you were quick, in that awed, painfully genuine tone of Lewis’, but, he hastily reminds himself, how fast or slow he was back then doesn’t matter anymore or, wherein Nico goes to university and Lewis races

Summary
The rule of law in their world was simple, cruel, maybe, but absolute.
Every mated pair had to reaffirm their bond once every five years, or the connection would begin to wither. The law was old, rooted in instinct more than governance, but everyone followed it. Because everyone knew the alternative.
Fail to re-mark your mate, and the imprint would start to fade. The mark on the nape, the symbol of unity, loyalty, love, would cool, losing its warmth until it turned dull and lifeless. And when it vanished entirely, the body would turn on itself.

"Be good for me, Lew."
Lewis's eyes darted towards Nico, which responded with a low hum — then, he⁶ got back to words.
The answer was a whisper. Not deliberately, but simply because that's the maximum his voice would reach in a situation like this. "Yes. All of it, that is."
Nico's voice, on the other hand, was a total tease. Slow in the right parts, air blowing on his face right when it mattered. "Oh, really?"
"Really."
One more step. Their lips almost touched, Lewis leaned back a millimeter, hitting the wall.
Their breaths were synchronised, their hands lingered for each other's bodies. And when their lips mistakenly brushed, Lewis closed his eyes.
tl;dr: "Lewis gets forced to do a private, +2hour long interview with Nico, which he hasn't properly talked to in ages. What will meeting again bring back in them? Will talking heal something in them, or just destroy their bond even more?"

Summary
"If you didn't want the child I was carrying even when its half of you, why would you want me?"
Lewis, hearing what Nico had to say, hearing Nico's reasons made him see the reality - the reality that they had chosen. Clearly, Lewis had chosen his career, and Nico, deprived of the chance to choose their family, did the same. They have cursed each other, blamed each other, called the other every and all unsavory names in the book; they played their mind games, and committed irreparable damage on what was left of their bond, yet, hearing that their child was reduced into nothing but a collateral damage in their quest to achieve their dreams, hurt. The pain incomparable, their future incomprehensible, what more is there to do for a bond that is barely there? To rekindle or to move on - that is the question. The answer? Your call.
