Summary
A large percentage of people shared similar routines.
The kind of life you could infer just by looking through the large windows of a building. Men doing the same work, dressed the same way, waiting for quitting time so they could return home to their perfect wives and live the life everyone believed every newyorker desired. From that moment on, Whizzer knew that no matter what happened, his life would never end that way.
Marvin was part of that percentage of people who lived similar routines.
And perhaps his life had always been destined for quietness. Nothing truly shook his world. No one and nothing cared enough about him to try to change it. Like a sea filled with waves that came and went joyfully while, deep beneath the surface, endless loneliness remained.

Summary
There’s a sweet pause before Whizzer gives a weak chuckle and pokes Marvin in the arm. “You look like shit,” he murmurs. He knows he does too, but it brings a little light to their shared darkness.
Whizzer doesn’t get better, Whizzer gets much worse. Marvin gets worse too - but he gets better at hiding it. Gets better at wearing layers to hide his weight loss, gets better at lying, because the truth is - he’s dying too.

Summary
On February 21st, 1943, after over 24 hours of labor and the near death of both mother and child, Marvin is born at 1:21:34 AM. He is small and struggles to breathe and the nurse tasked with caring for him prays he’ll make it through the night.
There’s water in his lungs, you see, fluid he has to hack out to survive. Officially, Marvin starts to breathe without problem on Tuesday afternoon, beginning to cry and not refraining save when he passes out for short, fitful rests.
Really, he never stops coughing, never stops drowning. The fluid in his lungs is slowly killing him from the day he is born, but Marvin doesn’t die here. Not yet.
First, he grows up.
