“The whole time I was with her, I kept imagining she was…someone different. Someone who was easy to be with. We could just…sit in silence and still be happy. Because we understand each other so well.”
A sick coil forms in Will’s stomach. They’re already like this. Just ten minutes ago they were each doing their own thing a few feet apart, and they were both content. But obviously Mike isn’t talking about him, because Mike doesn’t…like him like that.
In one blink, Mike is still splayed along the bed, and in another, he’s suddenly upright, suddenly very close to Will. Startled, Will reels back, his spine pressed into a knob on Mike’s headboard. Mike’s eyes are wild and crazed as he stares strangely at Will; Will’s are wide and confused as he stares back.
“You know what I mean, right?” Mike says carefully. Now that they’re within arms reach, he wraps a hand gently around Will’s ankle, just above his sock and below the end of his jeans, bare skin on bare skin.
Or: Mike is acting strange, and Will can't figure out why. When he learns it's because Mike is freshly single, Will does his best to be supportive and not at all weird about it. He's doomed.

Summary
Mike was burning up. Or dying, maybe. He couldn’t tell.
Because no matter what he did, he couldn’t get Will’s face out of his head. The way he had smiled so gently, the way he looked up at Mike through his lashes. The gentle shadows cast across his face by the streetlamps. He sat on the edge of his bed. Will slept in this room last week.
Mike dropped his head to his hands, letting out a groan.
Will’s lips, parting to say “goodbye, Mike”.
Mike fisted his hands in his hair, tugging. What was going on? What did that mean?
“Mike?” He looked up to see Nancy standing in his doorway, dressed in pajamas. “Is something wrong?”
And, mortifyingly, tears sprung to his eyes.

In his senior year of high school, Mike has a crisis. College looms on the horizon, and he'll have to live without the people he leans so heavily on. And Will – how can Mike live without Will?
From September '88 to June '89, his understanding of himself changes.

The walkie at Will’s hip crackled, as if Mike felt his ears burning. “Will,” he said, voice low.
Will unhooked the radio from his belt. Nervous energy coursed through him, and he took a deep breath before answering. “Yeah?”
“You okay down there?”
“I’m good. You?”
“Me too.” Then, a little bashful: “I got you something.”
Will’s face hurt from trying not to smile like an idiot. “Really?”
“Guys,” Lucas cut in, exasperated. “Get your own channel if you’re going to flirt.”
Mike confesses his love in subtle ways at the end of the world. It takes a minute for Will to catch up.
