It’s not distracting. Max doesn’t obsess about it afterwards, during the press conference or the race weekend. Max Verstappen is a four-time Formula One world champion, at the pinnacle of motorsport, and can fuck anyone he wants – he is not lusting after a camboy of all people.

When the chat falls silent again, Charles sighs. He bites his lip, considering whether to say something in the group, but ultimately decides against it. To the rest of the grid, he and Max are just rivals. No one knows about the unspoken connection they share, a bond that goes beyond anything they’d ever have with another driver.
And now definitely isn’t the time to reveal that secret.
Charles closes his phone and drops it onto the tiled floor. Sinking deeper into the bathwater, he shuts his eyes. He’s not a religious man, but he silently prays for a quick update on Max and that he’ll be okay. Because Charles isn’t sure if he can get through the season without Max as a distraction.
