He knows this is a poor choice, but Fluixon doesn't have anywhere else to go. It's this or leaving Paradise. He's betraying his family either way, but at least this one gives them a chance.

    -
in other words, the price of immunity is a steep one, and it has to be paid in blood.

    Summary

As Saps drives, Flux traces their route along the paper map. It stretches halfway across the dashboard, thin paper crinkling beneath his fingers. He traces out where they’ve been, where they’ve started, and where they might be going. This highway leads all the way to the coast, where the rest of the world crumbles into the ocean. Behind them is everything that has ever existed.

or, Flux runs away to see the ocean, he and Saps are soulmates, and only one of them knows how to swim.

    Summary

Fluixon finds himself stuck– literally and metaphorically. He's in small-town Appalachia. His life cycles like laundry, rolling over itself again and again. It's gloomy, sad, and then more and more falls in on him as it cycles on.

But hey, he makes friends along the way, and maybe the sense of dread hanging over his head or the smell of roadkill isn't all there is in this place.

    Summary

Another confession, one of many, and Fluix had never been a religious man but the light coming from behind him felt a whole lot like the one at the end of the tunnel.

“-I kept trying to… grasp at you, and have you do as my bidding, but you felt like… like a coffin, or worse, like you were up there with a shovel and were staring down at me while throwing ground about on my body, half-assedly. Like I was clawing at the walls of my grave all my life and just as the filth touched my guts did I realise I was supposed to, to let you bury me. And when you did, it felt right, it felt right that you were the one to be making a gravestone over my body, and it felt right that I couldn't breathe anymore.”

Of dying and death, last minutes alive together and a meeting in heaven.
