    Summary

“Storytime!” Ilya says in a sing-songy voice. There’s clapping and suggestive cat-calls, and Shane can already feel his cheeks heating up. Ilya looks at him expectantly, holding out his hand, and any optimism Shand had of getting out of this dies in the brightness of Ilya’s grin.

Shane feels his body standing before he can think to stop it, helpless to do anything but answer the call of Ilya’s outstretched hand. The applause gets louder, and his blush deepens, but they had said they’d do this together, and everything just feels innately less terrible standing next to Ilya.

A fact he’ll have to keep reminding himself of when this inevitably goes south.

“What’s the story today, you two?” Evan Dykstra asks, putting his headphones around his neck, as Shane and Ilya take their spot at the front of the plane.

“We thought we would go back a bit,” Ilya says. “To the time we did an ad campaign together.”

    Summary

“We need you to argue again,” Dykstra says suddenly.

A few seconds of silence follow, three sets, four if you include Haasy looking up uncertainly every couple of seconds, of eyes trained on them expectantly.

“You want us to argue?” Shane repeats slowly, confusedly.

Bood nods solemnly. “We played the best game of the fucking season after your argument—”

“It wasn’t because of our argument,” Shane tries to counter, but Ilya’s pretty sure he even knows it’s pointless.

“It was because of your argument,” Wyatt says. “You need to argue on game days.”

Dykstra points between Shane and Ilya. “We need you to argue tomorrow. No questions asked. You are the Captain and the Captain’s first man.”

Sorry?” Shane says at the same time Ilya says, “No.”

    Summary

For as long as Shane has been playing professional hockey, he has been studying Ilya Rozanov. It happened without him realizing. It's not like he sat down and put pen to paper, making notes of everything he knew about Ilya Rozanov. It's still unbelievable to him that he gets to see every version of him, all the parts of himself he doesn't show to the world who only wants to see him as a cocky player with a devil-may-care attitude. Shane counts himself lucky that he gets to see Ilya's soft side, his grumpiness when he doesn't get enough sleep, his sappy eyes when he wakes up beside Shane.

But there are some things about Ilya that Shane worries he will never know, that rest on the other side of some great gulf he cannot cross. Shane, who grew up untouched by the kind of tragedy that shaped the arc of Ilya's life, who sometimes feels overwhelmed at the depth of everything Ilya gave up for him, at the bravery it took for him to love Shane like it's the most natural thing in the world.

As he thinks about the future he wants with Ilya, Shane realizes he may need to better understand Ilya's past.

    Summary

    prompt: “…you want THAT colour?”

When Ilya had told Liliana that she could pick out any colour for her room, Shane had already known that it was going to be… a special sort of interesting. After all, she was their daughter. She was adopted, yes, but it was always pretty damn obvious that she was their daughter. Almost as though the universe had made a little girl just like them for them to take in as their own.

So when they went to the hardware store and their little girl — their sweet little angel who loved rainbows and unicorns and fairies, four years old but already with the career goal of being the prettiest princess in the whole entire world (and Ilya would move heaven and earth to make sure she got that, Shane knew) — did not immediately gravitate towards all shades of pink, Shane started feeling concerned.

    Summary

After they finished the Niagara Falls puzzle, David had it glued together and framed and hung it on the wall next to the family photos.  They couldn't have pictures of Ilya in the house unless they wanted to either constantly hide them or never have anyone over, so this was the best they could do for now.  It made Ilya feel warm inside every time he saw it.

Ilya gets into puzzles and finds a family.
