Summary
Ava rolls over, shutting her brain off, and very carefully presses the palm of her hand on Beatrice’s waist.
Beatrice tenses immediately, a sharp intake of breath filling the otherwise quiet bedroom.
A few seconds pass with nothing and Ava starts to pull away, an apology on her lips, when Beatrice grabs her wrist. It’s so fast that Ava hardly registers what happened, but suddenly, she’s being pulled to the other side of the bed.
Ava lets it happen, helps, and now she’s hovering over Beatrice. She’s so close she can see the shine in her eyes, how wide they are and she can see them flicker to her lips and back up.
Bea’s made this move, it’s her turn now. Ava leans forward, giving Beatrice a chance to turn her away.
When she doesn’t, it’s game over. Their lips meet and every functioning part of Ava’s brain that might tell her there will be consequences to this completely disappear.
The world could set fire tonight and Ava would keep kissing her as the apartment collapsed around them.

Summary
Because it turns out the Halo can want things now, sort of. Not the way a human would, with thoughts or motivation or articulable desires. The Halo wants things the way a tree wants water and shoves a taproot through flagstone to get it, which is all well and good for the tree, but less so for the idiot trying to keep her patio intact. Unfortunately for Ava, she’s both the idiot and the taproot. The flagstone is her dignity. The water – for reasons becoming rapidly and unavoidably apparent – is Beatrice.

She’s going to die here, pressed against the peeling wallpaper in their tiny apartment and deliriously happy, with her hands tangled in Bea’s hair and her legs hooked around Bea’s hips and her skin hot under Bea’s mouth.

The almost-kiss replays in perfect detail. Amanda’s face close to hers, the softness in her eyes right before she turned it into a joke, the split second where it didn’t feel like acting anymore. Where it didn’t feel like content.
Where it felt real.
Angela presses her palms against the edge of the desk and exhales shakily.
