Summary
Eddie slowly turns in his seat, reaching to the back to grab the magazine again. And then he hits Mike in the forehead with it. “You’re fucking ridiculous, Wheeler.”
Mike is well aware of that fact. He always has been. But the vanishing of Hot Coffee guy means that Mike has lost all hope for love (see: pathetic and slightly creepy infatuation) and his life is ending and band practice does not matter when the love of Mike’s life has disappeared.
Who cares that never in his miserable life would he ever manage the courage to actually speak to the guy? Pathetic crushes are just as big as decade long relationships, thank you very much. At least when it came to the beautiful barista.
“I’m going to die alone wearing, like, a fucking cardigan, with eight pet cats, aren’t I?”
“I don’t see how this is news to you.”

Voices, shouts and screams and teases and laughter bounced off the walls like a pinball machine gone wild, and Will could barely hear his own thoughts as he settled himself at the end of a table, nearly five feet on all sides separating him from the nearest camper. His sketchbook lay flat on the table and he ate with one hand while sketching with the other, carefully wiping his hands to avoid getting grease on the paper.
A chair screeched next to him, far closer than he expected, and he looked up with quiet surprise.
“Not sure if you knew this, but bowl cuts went out of style, like, forever ago. Actually, I don’t think they were ever in style. You should get that fixed.”

“I bring gifts of peace!” Dustin cheered with a grin, unwrapping a grocery bag to show a case of beer. “Mike, take one. You look like you need it.”
A retort was building underneath his tongue before the sound of the bathroom door latch distracted him, and at the turn of his head, all the air punched out of his lungs like he’d been hit with a plank of wood.
It was a simple outfit, really.
Light wash jeans and a white button-down, the top two or three buttons undone and showing just a sliver of Will’s skin. A cheap-looking golden costume crown on his head matching a gold necklace chain peeking out from under his shirt, and a few gold rings decorating his knuckles.
What really caught Mike’s attention, though, were the wings.

It rolls, it rolls, it rolls, Will is clenching his hands into fists so tight his knuckles are white, bracing himself, preparing himself.
He’s so focused on steadying his breathing, on wrapping his heart in a guard of barbed wire before the blow lands, that he doesn’t quite see the number on the dice.
Mike lets out a shaky breath next to him. “It’s a seven.”
Will runs through the list in his head. Three times, before it clicks. He thinks he might throw up.
“C’mon, Wheeler. Don’t keep us waiting,” Max teases, and Will finally catches the satisfied gleam in her eyes.
A 20. He gets twenty minutes locked in a linen closet with Mike.
Two years ago, he would have been jumping for joy.
But Mike won’t even look at him.
