He frowned, a hint of frustration in his eyes. "What do you mean?”
"What do you mean ‘what do I mean?’" She shook her head, feeling a mix of exasperation and bewilderment. "Sasuke, you never asked me. We've never even talked about it."
Sasuke’s expression shifted to one of disbelief, the confusion dripping into a natural stutter. "How can you say that? We've been living together, sharing everything... How is that not…? How’s that not a- an agreement?"
“An ‘agreement?’ Is that what we’re calling it?”

Summary
The absence of the unity fire walk, a staple of Uchiha weddings, should be insignificant. The last time Sasuke had seen it, he was still a tiny boy. His cousin’s cousin Ruka was getting married to another clan member and Itachi was asked to help the other young men light their fire walk to the ceremony site.
“But I wanna do it, too!” he remembers whining to his mother as she helped him don his jinbei. “It’s not fair that Itachi gets to do everything…”
“You know, dear,” she’d said, pulling his attention up from where Sasuke’s tiny form stood. “If you work really hard on your katon, maybe you can light Cousin Ai’s fire walk by the time he gets married.”
With a glimmer in his naïve eyes, Sasuke threw two fists up in the air. “Yeah!” he screamed, completely ignorant that his Cousin Ai was barely an infant at that point in time.

He never knows what he's looking for.
It could be a glimpse of anything. A cherry blossom tree in bloom. The patterned dress of a mother holding her child by the hand. Rose quartz reflecting the sunlight from the walls of a cavern after a rainy day. A pale carnation sticking out of a bush.
Pink chases him wherever he goes.
He doesn't mind. If the sight is clear enough, it breaks through the bleakness.
It brings forth a heartbeat.
Somehow, he feels like he’s waiting for something. For a memory to come forward.
The promise of life waiting to grow.
