'Ed looked away again, preferring to imagine what emotion could be across Al’s face than stare at the expressionless stone. To his dismay, his memory of what Al looked like was clouded by Golurk’s body. He glanced back at Al, he should give him the respect of eye contact, then looked down. “I know, I’m sorry.”
Ed leaned on the window, watching the desert appear stationary as the train barreled to the next town. “So?” Al questioned again.
A sigh was his first response, followed slowly by exactly what he wanted to talk about.'

Riza’s parents followed gender presentation very seriously. Her mother had long hair, smooth skin, wore dresses and skirts and flowy shirts. Her father had short hair, was rough around the edges, and wore work pants and buttoned shirts. Her mother was beautiful and her father was handsome. Mother was a woman, father was a man. Riza, being born a woman, had to follow her mother’s footsteps. Long, blonde hair, combed to neat straightness and rarely tied up. She wore skirts and blouses, and owned a single pair of pants for when she needed to work in the garden – a lady couldn’t let her legs get dirty, after all. She was never allowed to help her father with house repairs, even if he wasn’t keeping up with the work. She always had to assist her mother with the cleaning, the laundry, the cooking. It was normal, it was just life. Even though ‘just life’ didn’t feel much like living.

‘‘I used to think Fullmetal was a crude nod at your prosthetics…’’
Roy Mustang’s words were laced with a thoughtful hum, and Edward tried not to feel hurt by the misassumption. Many heard his title and assumed it came down to his automail arm and leg. Ed had just hoped the Colonel – after everything – would’ve been different; that Mustang would’ve looked past Edward’s ill-fitting uniform and cripplingly-heavy automail and only see him as a person.
‘‘But,’’ Mustang continued, pensive, ‘‘I think they spelled your title wrong. You’re not Fullmetal, you should be Fullmettle. As in, you are full of mettle.’’
Edward blinked, utterly baffled.
‘‘Mettle, kid. M-E-T-T-L-E.’’
Mustang spelled it out for him. Literally. A genuine smile tugged at the Colonel’s lips as he rumbled out a fleeting chuckle, affectionately sweeping a hand over the top of Edward's golden crown. The boy's throat constricted as an annoying warm blur suddenly invaded his vision. He had experienced more kind words and actions under this man’s brief command than he had experienced in a long, long time.
It was just a shame that it was only a temporary arrangement.
