Charles opens the door in his work out shorts and giant hoodie, half of his hair smooshed to the side of his head while the other sticks straight up. He's frantically trying to smooth it with one hand as he swings the door wide with the other, but gets distracted by Max standing there, red-cheeked and trying to pretend he isn’t panting.
The cloud of rainpancakesearthsyrup floods into his apartment, making Charles blink dazedly. It’s so fucking good. He can’t help but gasp a bit, surprised.
Max takes a final deep, almost heaving breath and shoots his arm out straight in front of him, a dark blue hoodie clenched in his fist. “Here.”
Charles doesn’t reach for it. He eyes Max, the sheen of sweat along his hairline, the fit of his relatively but not egregiously skinny jeans.
“Did you—did you run here?”
Max grimaces a little, then shrugs. “Brought this for you.”

Charles has spent the last 28 years highly sensitive to smell, usually to the detriment of his own well-being. So what if Max’s presence—and scent—have always helped with that?

He could hear Max moving behind him, the rustle of a damp jacket being stripped off, the soft thunk of something set down on the table. Every sound felt too loud in the enclosed space.
Every silence felt worse.
At last Charles spoke without turning around. “This is absurd."

Summary
Charles had known Max for about a month now, and still could not wrap his head around the way a single person could be so infuriatingly uncanning and unfairly good-looking at the same time. Though knowing was maybe not the right term to use when referring to Max Verstappen. Nobody but the selected inner few actually knew Max, at least that was what Charles suspected. Today, however, Charles was determined that that distance would end, for a bit at least. Because he and Max Verstappen had been grouped together for a project in their Statistics lecture, which, fortunately, as Charles found himself thinking, required some work to be done outside of class.
Or: Max and Charles attend the same college. They start flirting with one another over Instagram Notes. The only issue: Carlos thinks that he and Charles are basically already in a relationship, and Daniel has been fancying Max for a while.
