He lowered his head and a chill soon followed. They say the nervous system reacts to moments of fear or harmful moments with fight or flight, but Emma knew from her therapist that there were two more that's often forgotten: freeze or fawn. Even after three years of therapy and learning how to create boundaries, placed in a city where she knew no one and knew nothing of the culture, she knew she'd fawn.
“I just want to make sure you're okay.” She found herself reaching out to touch his shoulder, but stopping herself to straighten back up. She’d learn her lesson about touching people without warning, or consent.

Summary
Brendon Park has spent years building a reputation as one of the most respected surgeons in Pittsburgh: disciplined, composed, and entirely untouchable. The last thing he needs is a secret affair with the eighteen-year-old lifeguard at his neighborhood pool.
Emma Nolan knows the attention is dangerous from the start. But Brendon sees her in a way nobody else does—smart, ambitious, capable of more than the small suburban future everyone expects her to want. Between summer storms, lingering touches, and stolen nights hidden from the neighbors, their flirtation slowly twists into something far more intimate.

Summary
You could shake him off. You could tell him very firmly to stop touching you and he would, at once, you’re sure of it. But this feels like a little game that he’s playing, that he’s been playing alone up until now. The question is whether you want to be an unwitting piece in the game or whether you want to play. Your answer changes in an instant, the flick of a switch.
You don't need help. You've built an entire life, an entire career, off that one golden rule. And you have the competence, the skills, to pull it off, to make it abundantly clear to everyone around you to leave you to your own devices.
Apparently, Dr Jack Abbot did not get the memo.
