“How was your trip?” Yibo finally asks when Xiao Zhan doesn’t say anything else. He asks it like he genuinely wants to know, but it’s also not exactly the whole question. It’s strange when he’s not direct, but Xiao Zhan knows it’s intentional, because back in August, when Yibo stepped forward with “Zhan-ge, I’m in love with you,” Xiao Zhan stepped back with several “I don’t know if...”s and now Yibo waits to see if Xiao Zhan will meet him in the middle again.

When Yibo gets the call to represent Apolune in a last-minute substitution for the Genubian asteroid rights negotiation, he drops everything to make it to Helion before the talks start. He gets there before his wardrobe does, even; and after a reception that passes in a sleep-deprived haze, he wakes the next day ready to face down the Helion consul and hold the line for Apolune.
That would be fine—this is Yibo’s job, after all. It’s just unfortunate that the consul of Helion has a very familiar face.

“You need to learn to take your time with some things, Wang Yibo,” Xiao Zhan says as he lets his fangs fully extend. The way that Yibo’s gaze drops to his mouth like he’s magnetised shouldn’t please Xiao Zhan as much as it does. “Have more patience.”
“You’ve had three-hundred years to hone your patience,” Yibo says with a little upward shift of his hips, stretching his arms above his head like he’s offering himself. The sun has well and truly set now, the light of the city at night much more pleasant than the sunlight of hours earlier. “I’m young and greedy.”
“Very greedy,” Xiao Zhan agrees, tucking his face back into Yibo’s neck.
