Summary
It was a joke. An intentionally crass and hyperbolic joke. He wanted to rile Edgeworth up, break this weird tension, and signal that this—whatever it was—wouldn’t change anything.
He expected Edgeworth to lecture him about daring to imply anything of the sort.
He expected him to come clean about his real problem in an attempt to set the record straight.
He expected a sacrificial headache for the wrong guess.
He didn’t expect a lock to break.
Or: During an argument, Phoenix rips off Edgeworth’s jabot. Edgeworth has feelings about it.

Summary
He doesn’t even realize that his fingers have been running through the sweatshirt until he looks down. The gray fabric is quite soft to the touch, surprising Miles. He had expected it to be slightly worn down, given how often Phoenix is wearing it. The warmth in his chest returns at the thought of Phoenix giving this to him—something painfully intimate about it all.
No. He shakes his head, trying to shoo the thoughts away. He had simply felt guilty about everything. That’s all this is.
Still—he decides to take what he gets and puts on the hoodie. It’s quite comfortable—far more loose than his usual attire, and less restricting.
But as soon as the hoodie is on his shoulders unzipped, he notices something that he didn’t think to account for.
It smells like Phoenix.

"We're here.", David states, looks over to the figure in the passenger seat, "Your forever home."
God, he feels like he's rehoming an old cat.
