“Now you’re flattering me,” he says. “Knock it off before I get sentimental.”
She leans into him and he squeezes her shoulder companionably; and she turns her head to kiss his cheek and the corner of his mouth, companionably, as one would kiss a friend. His sharp intake of breath is anything but companionable, and her heart leaps into her throat.
