They were friends.
And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

Rangi handed the box over to Kyoshi and held her breath as she watched the girl open the lid. Inside was a dark leather harness with bronze buckles and a polished shaft made of dark wood. Rangi heard Kyoshi’s breath catch and saw her grip on the box tighten.
“Do you know what it is?” Rangi bit her lip and studied Kyoshi’s expression for any sign that this might have been a bad idea. A beat passed before Kyoshi gave a slow nod.

“Good,” Rangi walked around the desk slowly, tracing her finger along its polished surface.
“Because that means...” The firebender placed her hands on Kyoshi’s shoulders and swung her leg over to sit in the tall girl’s lap. Rangi leaned in, kissed the hinge of Kyoshi’s jaw, and dropped her voice down to a whisper. “...that you can have your dessert.”
