    Summary

Mel King was a creature of habit.

There was a specific sort of choreography to her life beyond the chaos of the Emergency Department. A carefully controlled routine, a color-coded calendar, a rigid set of rituals that kept her grounded enough to keep showing up day after day, to keep on doing the work that was required of her to save lives.

Everything was going fine for Mel. Her personal life was predictable, unexciting, and perfectly fulfilling, thank you very much.

Enter Frank Langdon, agent of chaos.

    They were friends.

And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.

It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.

It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.

It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

But, come on. Not one rumor? Really?

    Summary

Some nights were, naturally, worse than others.

Nights where Frank laid in bed for so long, staring at the ceiling, that it made his heart start to race with anxiety and his back ache and ache and ache no matter how he positioned himself. Nights where his thoughts spiraled out into worst-case-scenarios that seemed so vivid and inevitable that he would have to get up and go to the bathroom, just to turn the light on and look at himself in the mirror to remember what was actually real.

Those were the nights when he wanted the pills again the most: alone in his guest bedroom, trying to wring sleep out of his body like the last few drops of water out of a dirty dishcloth.

He tried not to call Mel on nights like that. He did not always succeed.

There was a lull in the conversation after that.

Frank didn’t mind it, not at all actually, mostly because it was never truly silent with Mel. She was humming softly under her breath as they switched pink for yellows and yellows for pink. He wasn’t sure if she was humming a string of nonsensical sounds or if she was humming one of her favorite songs at that moment—either way, Frank could listen to it forever and ever, Mel and her lovely little sounds.

It drove him crazy in the best of ways.

She clearly knows she got him good because she laughs right along with him, dropping her head against his shoulder as the two of them laugh over everything and nothing at all, only to sit back up straight a few moments later.

It was a testimony to just how sleep-deprived they really were that they found this hysterical.

He misses the weight of her cheek on his shoulder and her hair tickling the underside of his chin like a painful ache, so maybe that’s why he doesn't think, he just does. One minute they are doing this weirdly delirious snort-laughing thing and the next Frank is threading a hand in Mel’s hair to pull her in.

He doesn’t kiss her—he doesn’t press his mouth against her own until he coaxes his own special sounds that are meant just for him.

No, he presses their foreheads together, ignoring the way her glasses are awkwardly digging into the bridge of his nose.

They couldn’t get any closer than this, but it’s not close enough for Frank. He’s greedy. Everyone knows that. And Mel knows that too. She knows he’s not a good, honorable man, but she’s not pulling away. Her laughter fades away and suddenly she’s leaning in, affectionately rubbing her nose against his own.

    This is weird.

It’s weird and inappropriate in a million different ways. But he can’t bring himself to pull away, not when Mel shuffles close and grabs ahold of Frank’s black scrub top, nor when he can feel the shiver that passes through her body when he sucks in a deep breath.

“You…” Frank starts, voice raw and husky and so, so wrecked. “Jesus Christ. Mel. That was a terrible joke.”

“We can go inside,” he offers above her. He smells like smoke and pumpkin pie and the irish spring soap they keep in their hospital showers. “And leave. Maybe steal Dana’s pie.”

    “Mm, in a minute.”

She presses her face into his shoulder, breathing him in a little deeper and warming her nose in the process. It feels nice to be held like this and while she’s aware anyone could walk outside and see them, she doesn’t really care. She wants him to keep touching her.

She’s tucked under the crook of his arm and as she peers up, she’s aware of how close they are. He’s staring at her already, his eyes intense and still so light even under the night sky. She can see the condensation from their shared breath and she wants to say something, anything, but he beats her to it.

“You look really beautiful tonight,” he tells her. “I mean, you look beautiful all the time. But the green,” he says, tugging lightly on the front of her sweater, “It um, really brings out your eyes.”

    “Oh.”

“Sorry, I just… I wanted you to know that.”

“Thanks,” she manages around the cotton crowding her throat, “I think you look beautiful all the time too.”

Frank blinks at her once, lips parting and her eyes flick down helplessly to watch his tongue poke out to wet them.

    “Mel…”

She’s not sure who moves first, all she knows is one second she’s admiring the dimple in his chin and the next she’s got her mouth on his.

It’s tentative and barely a kiss at all, like they’re both too afraid to spook the other, but she curls her hand into the front of his shirt and gasps, lips parting and tentatively tracing her tongue along his. The floodgates open and his hesitation quickly becomes desperation, a groan from deep in his chest that nearly makes her fall over and a hand on her face, his thumb on her jaw to coax it open further. She moves with him gladly and tastes the smoke from his cigarette and the pie they had been sharing earlier on his tongue. Despite the chill, her body is aflame and she stands on the tips of her toes under the crunch of fresh fallen snow, kissing him just as deeply as he kisses her.

The moment the pieces fit together Cassie has to scoff at her own stupidity.

The picture keeps shining back at her from his phone, no matter how long she stares at it. One sigh. Two heartbeats. Three taps of her foot. His screen doesn’t turn off. Four shakes of her head. Five blinks. Six seconds.

The fool must have disabled automatic the screen dim feature just so he could longingly and dreamily and stupidly stare at a photo of Mel, despite the fact that Cassie is pretty sure every time Langdon closes his eyes he can see Mel perfectly in his mind.

Cassie lets her emotions battle it out for a second inside her. In the end, both disgust and fondness tie for first place.

It’s nice to see Langdon like this, of course. Pathetically pining, sure, but also awkwardly excited. Carefully optimistic for all that he is worried and tentative, too.

    “Mel,” he says.

He swears there’s more words inside of him, a lot more of them. There’s so much he wants to tell her, things he’s wanted to say for what feel like centuries now.

And yet, when he opens his mouth again all he seems able to say is, “Mel. Mel.”

In kind, Mel speaks again, saying, “Frank…”

He can read the apology in her eyes before she even verbalizes it. He doesn’t want it, though. He doesn’t want her doubts, or her regret, or her nerves, either. He wants her.

So before he can second guess himself, he leans forward and captures her lips with his.

As their mouths touch, he keeps his eyes open. He wants to memorize this moment, saving it in the back of his mind for rainy days, for the times when he needs a reminder of all that he has gained, all the he never wants to lose. Every time he blinks, he snaps a new shot: the tip of her nose getting redder, the slight shadow of her eyelashes over her cheekbones, the wetness on her Cupid’s bow.

When they separate, he takes one last mental picture, perhaps his favorite of them all: her full face, relaxed, her shiny lips parted, her cheeks painted a lovely shade of red, the kitchen light behind her creating a faint halo around her head.

Her eyes open languidly and their gazes catch for just a second before she darts forward, kissing him again.

This time, he lets go fully, giving himself completely over to the experience, to her.

    His eyes close.

He didn’t even realize he had let go go her phone at some point but he’s glad he has use of both of his hands so he can touch her as reverently as she deserves. His fingertips trace the contours of her face, mapping the spots where the softness gives way to roughness where she has a blemish.

He can faintly taste blood as he tugs her bottom lip with his teeth, and he laps at it eagerly, hoping he is both stinging and soothing her. The combined sound of their breaths is loud in the stillness of the apartment.

If he listens closely enough, he can catch the way she is holding back whimpers when his tongues twists just right.

Each chapter holds up on their own, doesn't read as incomplete

    -

Their hands are still touching and he takes the opportunity to flip his over, pressing their palms together, and she draws in a shuddering breath. It’s embarrassing, the reactions he’s able to draw out from her by the slightest of touches and yet she can’t help it. She feels like she’s about to combust.

“We are friends,” she says, doing her best to keep her voice even and steady. “You’re probably my best friend.”

He just hums in response, his thumb tracing over the delicate bones of her wrist. She takes another shuddering breath and finds herself running through the names of all the bones of the wrist to distract herself from the heat threatening to consume her. Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetrum, Pisiform…

Langdon for his part seems cool and collected, a stark contrast to her undoubtedly fire engine red cheeks and clammy palms.

“I don’t think friends want to do the kinds of things I want to do to you,” he says measuredly and god, Mel thanks every deity she could think of that she’s already sitting because her knees almost buckle at his words.

“What kind of things?” she manages to squeak out and he laughs, a dry self deprecating chuckle, before releasing her wrist.

“Things that I definitely shouldn’t be,” he says. He rubs his hand across his face and sighs. “God, Mel. You’re just so-- fuck.”

He has the frenzied look in his eye, the same one he had all those weeks ago when he found her on the floor of the trauma bay after she was attacked. The kind of look that threatened to burn everything in its path just to get to her. Her stomach flips as she studies him, the want that she’s been feeling since that moment blatantly echoed on his face.

It sucked to acknowledge what he'd done to anyone, obviously, but for some reason it always felt the worst in front of Mel, because she'd never once shown him even a hint of judgment for it. He could list every shitty fucking thing he did, all the drugs he stole, the lies he told, all of it, and Mel would just sit there and nod and tell him Okay, well, thank you for being honest with me.

It wasn't that he didn't want her to do that. It was that he craved it so badly he couldn't stand it, needed her acceptance with an intensity he didn't know how to handle.

“What are you doing after work, Dr. Langdon?” Dr. Michaelson asks after the gurney is pushed from the trauma room.

Donnie doesn’t glance up from the instruments he’s gathering, but he doesn’t have to to know that Langdon’s grinding his teeth. Donnie keeps the smirk off his own face even though Dr. Michaelson has probably forgotten he’s still there.

“I’m making my kids dinner, giving them a bath, and getting them to bed,” Langdon says, pulling off his blood-stained gown.

“Aww, that’s so sweet! You must be such a great dad,” Dr. Michaelson says. The grunt that is the only response she gets doesn’t deter her. “And what do you do after that? To…unwind?”

Someone should really give this woman a lesson in subtlety. Donnie does look up now and catches Langdon’s eye. His face is red and when Donnie raises an eyebrow at him, he looks like he’s about to blow a gasket. He doesn’t actually do it, though, just stripping off his gloves like they personally offended him.

    “I FaceTime Mel.”

    “Oh! And who is Mel?”

There’s no way Dr. Michaelson has been working here for over two weeks without figuring out that there’s a PGY3 resident named Mel who’s on a short leave. She’s playing dumb. Donnie wonders idly if that works for some men. He’s never found it attractive himself, and judging by both Langdon’s ex-wife and Dr. King, Dr. Michaelson’s strategy probably won’t prove effective.

Langdon slams his dirty gloves into the garbage. “The love of my life,” he snaps, shoving the door open, and then he strides out of the room.

Donnie manages to wait till a pale, dazed Dr. Michaelson has drifted out into the hall before he lets out a snort of laughter

I haven't laughed that hard in ages at a scene in a fanfic

    -

Mel felt like she was missing something. She suddenly thought of what Santos had said: there’s bets about everyone. If there were any about Langdon, Mel hadn’t heard them. The thought made her slightly uncomfortable, especially with how he and McKay were looking at each other.

Mel tried to change the topic. “The next time we go out, Langdon can show you his party trick - he can tie a cherry stem in his mouth.”

McKay set the tablet on the counter and turned her entire body to face Langdon, now severely unimpressed. “Is that so, Frank?”

Langdon went red. Mel frowned at him. He’d seemed proud of his cherry stem trick. “He can do it really fast,” Mel said, trying to back him up. McKay still wasn’t laughing. “It was neat!”

McKay huffed out a breath, which might be the best Mel could get out of her. She struck another tally in the doesn’t think I’m fun evidence.

Before McKay could reply, Dana came up to the three of them with a tablet in hand, her glasses on the tip of her nose.

“What are we standing around for?” Dana asked. “We’ve got a bowel obstruction waiting in central five -”

“I’ve got it!” Langdon said quickly, and then looked to immediately regret it. McKay laughed into her shoulder as he went even redder, then turned on his heel to march off without another word. Mel blinked after him.

“Mel,” he says. “Mel, I have to tell you something.”

She looks alarmed. Frank wishes he could skip this bit, but it’s important, so he can’t; he just has to make it through.

“Are you okay? Is it—?” She steps closer, faltering.

He makes a wounded noise at her hesitation. “Can you let me know if you’d like to kiss me?”

Mel gives him a stunned look. Frank wonders if this was a terrible, awful idea.

“Can I ‘let you know’?” she repeats.

“Yes,” he answers wretchedly. “Because you’re very important to me, and everyone says I’m in love with you, and well—I think they’re probably right, because people are generally pretty good at pointing out when I’m trying to kid myself. I mean, they’re definitely right, and I haven’t been kidding myself for a while, actually. So yeah—I love you, and I’d like to take you to Japan, but I think we both know that’s going to be pretty difficult, so I thought I should at least kiss you first, if you’d—be open to that.”

For a moment, Mel stares at him. Frank calculates the possibility of making it past her to leg it out of the door, before she starts to gently turn him down.

    “Frank.”

    His stomach clenches. “Yes?”

“Yes, I’d like you to kiss me. I have done for months. I’m sorry, I’m just—surprised—”

And Frank laughs, because, no, she’s the surprising one, and God, he thought he’d been obvious, or maybe he hadn't, but the relief that washes over him is so acute he can’t help it. His laughter becomes trapped in his throat, transforms into a whine, and then Mel’s stepping towards him and he’s gathering her in. He slides his fingers under her chin and tilts her face up and kisses her, feeling the imprint of her glasses, sliding his mouth over hers. Mel kisses with precision and determination, which he really should have expected, and Frank loses himself in her, guiding them back against the doorframe, his other hand on her hip to keep them steady, gasping as he breaks away.

    -

“You must be Mel’s boyfriend. Nice to meet you, I’m Ethan Allen”. That was an unfortunate last name.

“Frank Langdon, nice to meet you too. Sorry I was late” Langdon shook his hand.

“I told you it was not a crush” Mel mumbled to Samira, a little defensively, pressing her face to the side of Langdon’s neck.

    Well, clearly.

“I think I am just better at keeping it professional at work than you are, sweetheart”. Langdon said smugly, kissing the tip of Mel’s nose when she made a face at him.

    Sweetheart.

    Sweetheart.

    Samira needed an actual drink.

Mel’s mouth fell open in outrage. “You look at me like that at work too, all the time, and I don’t see people talking about your crush on me”.

“And how is that I look at you, Dr. King?” his voice was low and sultry. Ugh.

    It’s different, Samira thought privately.

Langdon looked at Mel like that since day one.

Frank has never been a good sleeper. It's a blessing and a curse in turn, but he's made peace with needing less sleep than anyone he's ever met.

And then he meets Mel King, and she changes that.

    (She changes everything.)

OR — Over a series of late night talks, texts, FaceTimes, and maybe dates, Langdon and Mel fall in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.

😭 might be one of the best yet

    -

Instead, he says, “you know, the, uh, funny thing is? I didn't impulsively run into that fight. I'm not an idiot. Donnie is a big guy, and Mateo MMA fights for fun, so they didn't need me.”

(She makes a mental note to talk about that with Mateo, because that's concerning, both for how detrimental concussions can be, and for concern for his very nice smile.)

“Oh?” She asks, watching his face carefully. He's looking at her with that same desperate I need to kiss you look, but his eyes won't leave hers now.

“They didn't need me,” he repeats, and this time, his eyes fall on her lips again. “But I saw you in the middle... and I thought you might need me.”

    Oh.

    Oh, okay.

She bites at her bottom lip slowly. He's watching her so, so intently.

“I do need you,” she says simply, and then, like she's done it a hundred times before, she leans forward in the darkness and brushes her lips against his, softly, slowly, nothing tentative about it.

When she pulls back a few moments later, he doesn't let her go far, his hand coming up to cup her jaw.

“Finally, Mel King,” he murmurs. His thumb brushes along her jaw, his fingers graze her neck, and they're both laughing into another kiss.

It's a little desperate, and a lot perfect, and his tongue slips along hers as he laughs again. She thinks she always knew he'd be the type to laugh into a kiss, long before she knew she'd get to taste the sound of it.

    Summary

The car pooling, she thought, represented this blurring of boundaries: not quite work but not quite personal life, either. If somebody asked her if she ever saw Langdon outside of the hospital, what should she say?

Mel and Langdon car pool to work.
