Summary
At once, Duncan felt his pulse quickening. He could not believe what his ears were listening to.
“Prince,” the knight echoed mockingly. “You mean the smug cunt of the Red Keep.”
For a second, he saw red and felt the anger crawl up his nerves. His hand curled around the pommel of his sword. He imagined crossing the distance in three strides and one fist in the first man’s collar, the other driving into his teeth, then smashing the second’s nose against the wall until he choked on his own blood. It would be easy, he thought, before realizing then what? Two knights assaulted by the Captain of the City Watch. The rumors would spread quick. Soon, Aerion’s name would be dragged further through mud because Duncan could not master himself.
Duncan overhears something he was never meant to hear, and Aerion risks everything to protect both his honor and their family. It results in a hurried retreat and a birth that comes sooner than anyone expected.

Strong were the lungs of Maegor, and tireless. Within the first sennight of his life, he had established a tyranny over the Red Keep; servants crept about corridors with anxious eyes and noble ladies who had once begged for a glimpse of the prince now contrived polite excuses to shorten their visits. The babe wailed at the light, at the dark, at hunger, at fullness, at swaddling and at freedom alike.
He had survived his birth. Aerion, in truth, had scarcely done so.
Sleepless and recovering from his labors, Aerion tends to the fussiest babe of the realm and tries not to think of a certain knight’s absence.

“Bring him,” Aerion commanded again, his words breaking at their edges. “Bring him now.”
The maester hesitated for the span of a fractured heartbeat, for Ser Duncan was in the city, far beyond the castle walls. Aerion saw it, and his eyes flared near incandescently.
“If you dare remain idle whilst I bleed upon this accursed bed I swear by all that yet remains of my line that I shall have your heads when this is done.”
Aerion gives birth to his first child with the Captain of the Gold Cloaks. It is not an easy endeavor.
