Summary
Homecoming AU.
Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.
So he leaves.
Simple.
Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. Peter isn’t about to turn down an opportunity to fight alongside Tony Freaking Stark, but he also isn’t going to let his hero know that his recruit is a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout. So they strike a deal. Peter will help Tony. In return, the mask stays on.
And that’s when things get complicated.

Uncertainty_Principle’s The Third Option…
wow this was an amazing read... had to wait for the last stretch but it was always a fic where the updates are so worth it. solid story that delves deeply into so many heartbreaking struggles/issues (identity, self-esteem, mental disorders, dealing with truly terrible situations and people). Each arc had excellent pacing and were equally important to the story while being extremely engaging and so emotionally gripping. i didn’t expect to enjoy the POV shifts (because i usually don’t) but instead of taking the reader out of that established connection with peter it solidified and deepened it by letting us look at peter through the lenses of others. it also brought me closer to the narrators in each POV. And the writing is amazing; the fact that the writing is so utterly gripping in its style and intensity - i found myself invested in each character POV, engaging with their emotions (especially peter, oh poor peter) and rarely dismissing any parts as superfluous, poorly written, or even problematic... i laughed, i winced, i smiled, i cried. both sad and glad that it’s over. definitely a must-read. ❤️
Ps. LOVE THE TITLE - it really works on hindsight.
truly a perfect fic to reread. reading this again for maybe the fourth time (?) provided some insight into the thematic structure of the story - how each character POV is guided by the moral message of "responsibility is not a choice" - pete in his heroism and altruism, tony in his role as a famous superhero-billionaire, and may in how she tried to live a life her sister's death compelled her into but a life that was not authentic to her.
