He was pleased to see Kent's smile drop as he glared down at Ilya.
After a while, he finally said, "Fine. But you gotta get that fucking nerd to be your date for Winter Formal. And slow dance with him to one full song."
"I swear to fucking God, Kent. Leave Shane the fuck alone."
Kent laughed unkindly. "Calm down, Marleau. It's just a bet. Why do you even care about the loser?"
Ilya stepped in between them because Marleau looked like he might throw a punch any minute now. Why did he care so much about Shane Hollander?
"Because I'm a decent human being and you're a fucking piece of a shit," Marleau said.
Kent chose to ignore him and turned back to Ilya. "What do I get if I win?"
Ilya raised an eyebrow. "Why do you think I will lose?"
He laughed again. "Like I said. That kid's got a stick up his ass, Roz." After a moment, he said, "If I win," he paused, "I get your captaincy."

Summary
He figures Ilya would be pretty surprised if he showed up to his house out of the blue. Surprised enough to be put off, probably. Shane is way too bad of a liar to think of any plausible excuse. If this is really happening, if Shane is actually by some miracle getting another shot at this, then he’s going to have to play this smart. His impatience to see Ilya again will have to be tempered. He’s not sure how time travel works, but he has the sneaking suspicion that one wrong move could unravel everything.
Ilya is alive.
Just the thought of it is enough to make Shane crack his first smile in a year.

Summary
A year after the events of The Long Game, Ilya wakes up alone in his apartment in Boston. It turns out he's in an alternate universe where Scott Hunter stopped playing hockey before his and Shane's careers even got started. The Ilya from that universe wakes up next to Shane, a man he hasn't talked to in five years.
The series includes the story of what happens when the Ilya's switch places, a prequel story about the other Shane and Ilya when they were apart for those years, a story about what happens with the other Shane and Ilya after the Ilyas switch back to their own lives, and a story where the Shanes switch places a year later.
