He can't look at her right now. There's so much spinning in his head, in his stomach, a hurricane churning within him, full of the collateral of each and every one of his actions, all being thrown around the walls of his insides. Layla. Her father. How after the chaos of it all, she was inevitably going to come back to "You were there."

She tightens her jaw at that, but she doesn't snap back at him like she wants to. She can't afford to be confrontational. At least not recklessly so.
"Lots of cab drivers get personal," she offers with a shrug, sitting back against her seat.
"Not this one."

Summary
Three years after the probes carrying Taumoeba and Dr. Ryland Grace's final message arrive on Earth, humanity launches an interstellar spaceship with a brand new mission. Thirty-six crew members (including two graduates of a certain San Franciscan junior high school) travel to the star 40-Eridani to make friendly contact with the Eridians and bring them the alien life form from Tau Ceti-E that can save their star if Dr. Grace's sacrifice failed.
