Miles scraped together the facts slowly. He was pretty sure they were still alive, at least. They didn’t visit or send cards on birthdays or holidays, but sometimes Phoenix would make some vague mention of having heard from them, so Miles knew they had some kind of relationship. Miles never heard Phoenix take the calls, so he assumed they must come very late at night or early in the morning, so perhaps they were located in some distant place, timezones away from California. Perhaps they only called during work hours, which he tried not to feel preemptively annoyed by. Perhaps they weren’t the kind to call at all but communicated via email, or text messages. Facts, but not a lot of concrete information.
Miles gets curious about Phoenix's parents. Phoenix is... evasive.
