Summary
Her fingers had a gentle tremor to them, the thumb constantly in a state of vexation. He gave it a rub, not meaning to; it had become a force of habit - goodness knows what habit he owed it to - but it seemed right at the moment. The trembling stopped briefly, but continued.
Sophie is an emergency doctor, troubled by the work in front of her and what it took to get her there in the first place. Quickly attached and equally avoidant, she makes an effort to live, which gets more difficult each day. Benedict dabbles in art therapy, just serious enough for it to be an excuse to call himself a consummate professional, who gets very emotionally attached to all his patients. It isn't healthy, their attachment and maybe it will never be anything meaningful, but maybe all that mattered is the fact it was there.
Neither of them are cut out to save the other's life, but they try to anyway, knowing full well that in order to bargain with death, one must forget how to love.
