Gideon takes in the scent of Leon directly, entranced as though his dear comatose patient is but a snake charmer playing an irresistible tune. He smells the natural musk of Elbridge’s rainy cityscape on skin. The cologne he must have sprayed himself with this morning. And the bitter, infected blood of his slaughtered patients and staff.
His forked tongue flicks into the air, and with it he smells again: the acute scent of Leon’s infection. His proximity to death. The quickening imminence of it.
His poor subject.
It’s time to begin his treatment.
Leon is still unconscious. Gideon can no longer help himself.

“Why are you here?” Grotesque lips purse and smile, revealing crooked, gold plated teeth.
“…Is it for me?”
Leon says nothing in response, only stares up impassively, ignoring a steady growing warmth that both beats against his skin and stirs him as it expands within. He wants to believe in the slim chance that it's merely the harsh lamp light. Even his sickness.
He knows it's not.
Gideon drugs Leon before his interrogation.

They begin to squeeze.

The bread roll isn’t just bread. There’s a milky custard in the center that Akira can easily call the best thing to ever grace his mouth as soon as it hits his poor, deprived taste buds. The saturated sweetness paired with the smooth texture of the cream sliding across his tongue makes his body feel as light as a feather, like he’s floating somewhere far away from where he currently is.
“From now on, you’ll take your meals from here. On the floor.”
Akechi’s voice cuts through his satisfaction like a knife, and too soon is he grounded, back on his knees underneath the table, being fed like an animal as he cranes his neck forward for bread and custard.
The switch to Akira's cognitive double doesn't happen.
Akechi takes advantage of his chance in a different way.
