Genuinely the best Dispatch fanfiction I’ve read by far during my time in this fandom and it’s not even close.
The writing is so sharp and detailed and absolutely phenomenal. The setup, the way the details of this AU and how Robert ends up dispatching is so painfully parallel to canon events. And the details of Robert’s inner monologue. The constant joint-casing and swallowed-down fear and becoming so used to being constantly controlled that it’s a reflex as natural as any other to literally avert your eyes to any information you don’t want to be compromised. Holy shit.

Flambae has never been easy. A borderline case, difficult to get along with, hard to please, and uncooperative when it comes to playing nice. He has never had any reason to be kind, after all – a man born with powers like him brings only destruction, the scalding blaze of the wildfire, rather than the kindly heat of the hearth.
Who could love a man who burns with the heat of the sun? It would be a fool's errand to not avert ones gaze.

In any other case I’d leave this bookmark as private, but this fic nails both of their characterization so well and the writing structure itself is all but poetic at times. I haven’t seen a better exploration of Waterbae’s character dynamic and similarities anywhere else in the fandom.
