“I don’t know,” Hans mumbled. “Is there anything you’re not comfortable with?”

Henry had a hard time picturing ever being uncomfortable around Hans. Out of all the emotions he’d suffered since meeting him, that wasn’t one of them.

“I don’t think so. And you?”

Hans was silent for a moment, eyes fixed on the windshield. And then, just as Henry was about to return his own gaze to the scenery, Hans spoke in a low voice, barely louder than the music coming off the speakers.

    “Can I kiss you?”

“Yes,” Henry said, the word escaping him before his heart had even had time to jump.

Hans finally glanced at him then, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. His freckles popped against the rosy of his cheeks. Henry had always liked the color his skin took on sunny days.

Then, Hans grinned. “Eager, are you?”

And there it was. No, Henry couldn’t picture being uncomfortable around Hans. Exasperated, however, he had no problems imagining.

    ___
Henry wants to fit in in Radzig's upper-class world. Hans wants to avoid being pressured into an arranged marriage. What other possible option could they have but to pretend they're in a relationship?

"He sees me. He sees us. He sees that when the sun goes down and the armour comes off, you don't go to him to drink away the night. You come here. You choose a miller’s girl over a Lord’s company.”

"I’m not a dog on a leash," Henry muttered.

"No," Theresa smiled, a small, knowing thing. "But to him, you’re the only person who makes him feel like Hans instead of Lord Capon. And he’s jealous, Henry. He’s jealous of this little table. He’s jealous of the way you look at me, because he realises that all his titles can’t buy a single minute of the peace we have right now.”

    --

Henry is torn between safety and the unknown.

"My lord," said Galehaut, "I would do more for you than you would believe, and I have already begun."

Hans falls in love, finds a book, and tries to figure out how to avoid losing his best friend. It would be easier if he had anything at all to offer Henry, or if sodomy were not the sin of which men do not speak.

    Summary

    "What?"
    "His son!"
    "Oh. The bastard?"
Hans has never met either Radzig or the mysterious boy he kept hidden before apparently revealing him to the world in a flourish, and with a lack of explanation Hanush had called typical of his old friend.
    "Legitimised," Hanush corrects.
    "What difference does it make?"
"It means you are not to speak to him like some commoner unless you want to get in trouble."
Hans keeps his mouth shut on the thought that trouble sounds better than the excruciating dullness that is his life.

    --

Hans and Henry meet at Sir Divish's wedding, both fifteen and of noble status. It still doesn't stop them from punching each other on the first day.

A duel and a half later, Hanush makes Hans write to Henry in apology, and an odd friendship begins. Until it becomes more and, possibly, worse.
