    Summary

    “It’s okay. I don’t need anything.”

“I am not going to eat in front of you while you have nothing, Hollander,” Ilya scoffs. He plucks a can of cold ginger ale from the top shelf as casually as he can manage and slides it over the island, interrupting Hollander’s fidgeting thumbs. “You must be hungry, yes? It’s been hours since you left hotel. I can make something. Easy.”

    “Make… what?” he asks warily.

Ilya rolls his eyes and tosses a look over his shoulder. “Do not worry. I will find something that works for your special hockey diet,” he teases. He reaches back into the fridge. “Tuna melt okay?”

“No,” Hollander says primly. “And it’s a disease. Not a diet.”

He pulls his hands out of the cold and turns, blinks. “What?”

    Summary

Getting information out of Ilya about his family was like getting blood from stone. Maybe harder. It had been one of the first things Shane had noticed about him. Any questions about his parents – the kind of typical things Shane’s mom had taught him to ask to make polite conversations – would result in brusque, emotionless answers or, worse, actual anger.

But somewhere out there was Irina’s granddaughter. The only remaining blood relative that Ilya gave a shit about.

And Ilya could never go back, which was Shane’s fault.

    So that bothered him.

    Summary

When the sun went down, when the moon hung heavy among the twinkling stars, the silence crept back in with the darkness. Shane would sit on the couch, alone, staring at the glow of his phone, scrolling through rows of alternating blue and grey bubbles. Sometimes he would type things, sometimes he would smile in a way that he never had in front of his parents before.

Those moments were rare though, a hidden treasure the cottage took in with greed. Shane could be happy here. Shane was happy here.

    Just not all the time.

    --

Or, three summers Shane spends alone and the first one he spends with Ilya, as told by the cottage.

Ilya’s fingers had stilled completely, and Shane’s body went tight. “What’s…what’s oh?” He asked, voice thick, strained. “Ilya, what the fuck is oh?!”

“Shh, hold…” Ilya’s voice had become something softer, losing its sexual undertone as he pressed against Shane’s prostate, and his legs wobbled. “Yes, there.”

“Ilya I swear to fucking god if you don’t–”

Ilya kissed his hip and carefully removed his fingers. “This might be nothing,” he started, lips still pressed to Shane’s skin. “But I felt something.”

    OR

Ilya finds something. But it could be nothing.

    Summary

“You are planning to rob me or what?” He hears Rozanov call, and he can’t help but smile slightly even as he rolls his eyes, closing the door to the linen closet and feeling strangely lighter than when he opened it, reassured that he’s just trying to read into a blank page, that today doesn’t mean anything more than Rozanov doesn’t mind him being around, which is strangely flattering.

“I don’t know,” he calls back. “Don’t Russians like diamonds and fur and stuff? Where should I start looking if I want to know what my options are?”

He hears Rozanov laugh, and it makes him smile.

When he joins him in the living room once more, Rozanov tugs him down to lean against him again. Shane goes easier this time, settling into it, knowing it doesn’t mean anything other than the fact that he just happens to be the closest warm body, the person on Rozanov’s roster who filled today’s slot.

(the tuna meltdown doesn't happen) (this does not mean they get ANY better at communication)

(or: how shane didn't realize he had a boyfriend for several months)
