“I miss you when you're gone, y’know,” I said out of nothing. “I know I’m always the one who leaves, but I do. When I’m alone in bed at night, sometimes I wish you were there, but I’m scared, I think.”
“Of what?” He asked. I looked back at him to see that his attention was completely turned to me. I glanced down at my shoes. It was hard to be honest and look at him at the same time.
“That if I stay, I won't ever want to leave,” I said.
“What’s so wrong about staying with me?”
“You're selfish,” I said honestly. I don't know what was in the air, but I was feeling honest that night. “You never think about other people or their feelings. You just do whatever you want, and then you complain when it drives people away.” I turned back to look at him. “You're the reason you’re alone, James.” He was giving me that look he did when someone hurt his feelings, but he didn't want to show it. The one where his lip snarls up just a bit and his nose scrunches up, but his eyes give away his sadness every time.
“So, why are you here then?” He asked, his voice shaking. He tried to cover it up with anger. “If I’m such a waste of space shit person, why are you here?”
“Because I like you."

Though she couldn't parse the words Rachel had the impression of being asked a question. Opening her eyes fully was still beyond her but she did manage to get them to comply with just a peek, rewarded with the shadowy silhouette of a person amidst the garish fluorescent light.
"Where...?" she croaked.
"Less important than your 'where' is your 'how'," came a low, smooth response. "And the answer to that, Miss Dawes, is 'safe'."
Adrenaline flooded her system before her mind fully caught up as to why. Plenty of people had referred to her as such throughout her professional life, but only one in such a particular, drawling way.

Some of the older ones were white and faded, barely visible against his pale self, but other, newer ones stood out in glaring red. His fingers trailed along one that followed the bottom of his ribs, feeling the raised flesh. There was one just above his hip that looked enflamed, glistening with fresh blood. He must have reopened it sometime on the journey. He hadn’t even felt anything.
They were just scars, he knew that. Just scars. But all he could think of was weak.
