    Kip leaned against the counter, projecting an air of casual competence he absolutely did not feel. His heart was doing a stupid little tap dance against his ribs, which was ridiculous. He served handsome men all the time. Halifax was full of bearded fishermen and lumbersexual hipsters.

    But this was different. This guy looked like he was the forest.

    "Morning," Kip said, aiming for breezy and landing somewhere near slightly breathless. "What can I get started for you? We have a Guatemalan roast today that has notes of chocolate and existential dread, if that's your vibe."

    The one where Scott is a grumpy junior hockey coach and Kip is a charmingly awkward rugby player (and a barista). Both come with their own baggage. Both are miserable in their own way.

    "I prefer 'Golden Boy' to 'wall-crasher'," Kip shot back, a spark of genuine irritation finally overriding his exhaustion. "And for the record, figure skating requires precision, balance, and absolute control. It's an art form. Your sport requires a mouthguard and a high tolerance for concussions."

    To Kip’s surprise, Scott didn't bristle. Instead, the corners of his mouth twitched, and a slow, devastating smile spread across his face. It fundamentally altered the hockey player's entire demeanor, erasing the stoic, intimidating aura and replacing it with something warm, incredibly charming, and deeply lethal.

He could picture it perfectly: Kip sitting anonymously in Section 106, flanked by Elena and his dad, the three of them acting as a buffer against the world. They were the only family Scott had, the perfect camouflage for the one person Scott couldn't live without. Kip would be white-knuckling the armrests, pretending to be just another stressed fan, unable to tell a soul that his husband was currently lacing up skates in the basement.
