    Summary

“If hockey was that important for geopolitics,” María deadpans, leaning across the table to stab another pelmeni with her fork. “The Chinese would’ve gotten into it by now. The Russians want international concessions, and this is a cheap trick to get it. To be completely honest—”

She dunks the pelmeni into her bowl. It almost looks like she’s drowning it when she twists the fork, coating it in fragrant orange soup. It almost looks like it’s a thrashing animal.

“—it’s really annoying me. From a purely tradecraft perspective, from one lawyer to another, it’s a cheap trick,” María continues, pelmeni between her teeth. “Canada isn’t even the country who’s detaining Russian arms dealers. That’s US shit. It’s fucking annoying.”

Shane doesn’t say anything. Shane’s looking at the pictures splayed across the table, face-up, and thinking about how if this all ends here, all Shane will have to show people when they ask about Ilya are six mugshots from when he was transferred from the Moscow jail to the Siberian penal colony, where his cheeks are hollowed out and his eyes are vacant.

The term, he’s told, is temporary retrograde amnesia. Ilya doesn’t need the direct translation to understand: he forgot things. Ten years of things.

    Summary

“How long has this been here?” Shane asked.

    Ilya frowned. “What?”

    “This,” Shane said, pressing gently.

Ilya flinched, more surprised than hurt. He twisted awkwardly, reaching back, fingers searching. “I don’t feel anything.”

“You don’t feel that?” Shane asked. His voice sounded wrong to his own ears.

Ilya sighed, irritation creeping in. “You’re poking me. Of course I feel that.”

    “Ilya.”

“It’s probably nothing,” Ilya said, already pulling away, sitting up. “Muscle knot. I don’t know.”

    Or,
Ilya is used to surviving alone. Shane won’t let him. When illness forces their lives to change overnight, they learn what marriage really means. Not in vows, but in the relentless decision to stay.

Jayce Talis, newly promoted soloist at City of Progress Ballet, has just been cast in the role of a lifetime: the male lead in What Could Have Been, a rarely-performed ballet he happens to be obsessed with. The role originated by his celebrity crush Viktor. The role in which Viktor had a career-ending injury.

It’s already a lot of pressure. And then guess who shows up to rehearse it with him.
