    The quiet sounds of crying were not all that unusual to hear at night in the Red Room. You had to be careful—too loud and the handlers would shut you up quickly, and even if they were too far to hear one of the other girls was likely to call their attention to it herself. Still, if you were quiet enough to wake no one, or pitiable enough for the other girls to ignore you, crying yourself to sleep was not impossible.

    This crying though—Natalia thought as she lay awake in her bed—was much too familiar.
