He had called Shane- Hollander- by his first name. He heard his own name back. It was thrilling in a way he couldn’t articulate, and he didn’t want to think about why he couldn’t. He didn’t want to think about himself at the store, picking out the right brand of Ginger Ale and placing it carefully in the fridge. He didn’t want to think about the thrill of Hollander in his very own bed. He didn’t even want to think about the meal-prepped tuna melt that conveniently fit Hollander’s bird-food diet. He didn’t want to think about the fact that he knew the parameters of Hollander’s bird-food diet.

Summary
Shane and Ilya are relaxing at the cottage after a disappointing end to their season, soaking up the freedom before their baby arrives by surrogate later in the summer. Ilya gets a call from his attorney’s office in Boston, which he has not used since he moved to Ottawa ten years earlier. His niece showed up in their office looking for how to contact him, the only thing she had to go on was an envelope with the firm’s name and address on the trust fund paperwork she stole from her dad before fleeing Russia.
This is the story of the first few months of parenthood, welcoming a new baby and an unexpected teenager in the course of a few weeks.
