“Get your mind out of the gutter. I was simply observing…” Observing. Sure. As if he even believed that ridiculous excuse. Phainon tilted his head, a small, knowing grin tugging at the corner of his mouth as he leaned in—not touching, but close enough for their knees to nearly brush. “That so?”
A brisk sigh bubbles to his lips before Mydei could stop it. The sauna felt blisteringly hot now, as if someone had cranked up the heat just to watch him squirm. He let his head sink back against the oppressive wooden barrier, lashes shutting for a breath, hoping the angle hid the traitorous flush creeping up his neck. “Don’t flatter yourself. I was curious, not desperate.”
“Curious, huh?” Phainon slanted just slightly, voice dipping like rich globs of honey from a freshly torn packet. “Well, if you wanted to see my body that badly, you could’ve just asked. I don’t mind giving you an up close and personal look.”

“There is a word for being snarky,” the prince muttered. “And you fit that role perfectly well, knight.”
Phainon giggled, and the fluttering sensation in Mydei’s stomach came back. Something seemed to click into place in his head; something he never realized before.
Why he looked forward to sparring with Phainon so much. Why he got so flustered when he teased. Why he couldn’t seem to take his eyes off of him.
He could be wrong. He’d never felt it before, but all the signs pointed toward romantic attraction. The realization hit him like a tidal wave. This wasn’t how this was supposed to go!
Mydei tried not to look at Phainon’s bright smile. He could only hope he was wrong.

Mydei is doubtful about that given his father’s madness, but he takes the gamble, earning himself either a strong and knowledgeable ally or a dangerous foe.

Summary
Every few years, Okhema Kingdom holds a grand royal ball, inviting various neighboring kingdoms to attend and enjoy the sights that Okhema has to offer. This year, however, Kremnos Kingdom, which has had its borders mysteriously closed for many, many years, suddenly confirmed its attendance in Okhema. And, of course, Aglaea assigns Phainon to be their guard during the duration of their stay.
Little did Phainon know that this would be the most difficult assignment he would ever have.
