"Xander never slept earlier than Corrin. She recalled so many nights when, waiting for him to fall asleep, she instead easily sank into dreams. Meanwhile Xander, with closed eyes, lost himself in the residual noise of the day, playing back a stream of faintly remembered sounds that grew into a deafening roar as the night raged on. She knew this because she saw it in him — the pain of remembering too much and having to relive, in the darkness of his quarters, the fears and insecurities that left a shadow beneath his eyes.
“Insomnia,” he had called it.
It was when his body refused to sleep. It didn’t matter that this waking nightmare would stretch over many nights, leaving him in the terrifying company of all his regrets. Xander’s insomnia was bad enough before the war began, but now that the war has ended, it had only gotten worse."

The end of the war brings a promise of hope; home seems so close, happiness seems to be within arms reach. They're alive and there's a whole world out there for the taking, just waiting for them to claim it. If only it could be that easy, when one has lost and found oneself a world away.
