Summary
"There's Deer in there. I didn't know they could withstand this kind of cold."
Agatha is standing next to Wanda, who is now looking pensively across and into the forest. A beat passes, and there it is again, chest tightening accompanied by an urge she doesn't believe is here. She decides to pitch her voice instead, fitting the dramatic cadence she's about to use, and says
"well of course darling! the mountain witches have a long history with Deer, incorporating them into rituals, the animals getting protection from predators in exchange, all that. You seem bent on staying around these streets so I say we should fetch you a buddy or two."
Wanda turns her way, face cringing while also bright with a smile."I was going to say animals seem more of your thing but-"
"Forbid I yield to this weather. Westview is more appealing and considering Sara Proctor lives there, that's a low bar."
For what its worth, Agatha can welcome the sense of contentment that follows Wanda's laughter.

Carol feels the confusion slip onto her face. Nervousness creeps up her spine again. “Me?”
“I know everything that anybody has ever thought about you, Carol. Every memory. Every feeling. Helen. Your ex-girlfriends. Your dentist. It’s like I have a Carol encyclopedia in my head.”
Carol had thought that she was done experiencing fresh horrors. What a nightmare it is to realize that she is not. “Oh, god.” She says.
“Oh, god,” Zosia agrees.
After they manage to break Zosia free of the hive, Zosia and Carol try to navigate the field of landmines that is their relationship.

In all her travels across the globe, from the petty dutchies of Europe and through the minor emirs of western and central asia, nowhere had tangled itself quite so well as Japan. India was close second, but its overlapping layers of loyalty and religious conflict had made control in the region all but impossible. Japan, however, had everything she needed. A strict system of control and organization, yet broken just enough for anger, fear, and jealousy. So while War subjugated the step, Death shredded through the weak and infirm, and Famine grew her deserts, Makima had worked her way into Japan's complex strings of feuds and nobility.

“And you’ve never fucked?” The way she said it, it did sound a little stupid, “What do you do to pass the time?”
“I scare children,” Death shifted in her chair, still rubbing at the skin of one hand with the other. No wonder Agatha had nowhere to live, she thought. She was unbearable. “Amongst other things.”
