It started when he was seventeen. The royal family was parading about the kingdom on their royal progress celebrating the new decade. The whole village was out to see them go past and wave politely in their posh outfits and gold jewellery. Dan, honestly, couldn’t give a fuck, but he was dragged out by his family nevertheless.
Then he saw him. The Prince. He looked angelic, white-blond hair and pale skin catching the sun in a way that made him seem like he was glowing. And god, was he pretty, big blue eyes, full lips and a genuine smile across his face. Dan was smitten, just like that, his heart lost to the handsome man. And it wasn’t just attraction, Dan felt like there was something more there, some invisible force, like a string wrapped around his heart, drawing him to the Prince.

Dan steps off the train, and in front of him, looking equally as dishevelled but somehow still the most beautiful thing Dan has ever seen, is Phil. He’s real, Dan thinks, stupidly, in utter disbelief that the person he’s been thinking of almost every waking moment for the past few months is right here. Phil smiles, a wide, crooked grin. “Dan!” he exclaims, stepping closer, bringing him into an all-consuming hug. It feels warm, hopeful, like a sigh of relief. It feels like the Phil he’s slowly fallen in love with. It feels familiar, somehow. Dan leans into it, wrapping his arms around Phil, too. He smells like cheap Lynx body spray, but it’s somehow the best thing Dan’s ever smelled. “Hi,” says Phil, so quiet it’s almost a whisper. He sounds nervous, too, which makes Dan feel a little bit better.
