It should have been exciting, and it was, but he also knew for some reason that Ilya was not as dangerous as he sometimes pretended to be.
"Something funny, Hollander?"
"Why do you call me Hollander sometimes and Shane other times?"
"I say Shane when I want you to hear me, and I say Hollander when I need you to listen."

“Hmm.” Ilya’s voice is weighty, considering. Shane wants to taste it. “I cannot touch you?”
He can see it coming before it happens, knows he’s left himself open in one crucial, mortal way. Thinks hazily, from the ceiling of the bathroom looking down at himself, that maybe it was on purpose. That he left the gap in the armor, that he flashed it at Ilya, that he hoped Ilya would take the bait, would go in for the kill.
“But you can touch yourself.”
In the bathroom of the club, after watching Ilya across the room, the thing Shane's running from comes knocking.

Shane doesn't have anything against fighting in hockey. Truly he doesn't. But there are a million different things to love about playing on the same team as Ilya Rozanov, and watching him stew in the penalty box like a caged animal is near the bottom of that list for Shane.
