Summary
Sherlock brings John and Mary along with him on a case in Florence, but he has an ulterior motive: to reunite with Irene and explore intimacy on every level. But Sherlock and Irene quickly realise they have to face the reality of old wounds alongside the fantasies of their new relationship. And as the deceptions escalate, John fears his friend may be falling into another dangerous trap. And this time, it might be up to John to do the saving.
Part romance, part bromace, all angst. A sequel to my stories 'The Sign of the Four' and 'What He Likes', but can be read alone. I've written a lot of the story already and will try to update twice a week.

When Irene Adler contacts Mycroft Holmes with some shocking information and instructs him not to share it with Sherlock, he believes it to be a calculated power play against him. In some ways he's right, but the truth is more complicated, and personal.
This is an AU sequel to 'Neither A Soldier Nor A Gentleman' (http://archiveofourown.org/works/338793/chapters/548227) and so I suggest reading that first, but this work is also a study on the relationship of the Holmes brothers.
The POV switches between Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock Holmes, and Irene Adler.

Summary
Irene Adler knows how to get herself out of any dangerous situation; she doesn't need help, doesn't need pity, and certainly will never allow herself to break her own rules. However, when Magnussen's blackmail threatens to bring her entire world toppling down, she's forced to consider some very difficult and exhausting options. How long can she pretend she's alright before admitting the need for help - without making herself into a cliched damsel in distress? And how long will a certain consulting detective take to realize that something is wrong with the woman he's always kept tabs on, (and that he cares far more than he's willing to admit)? In summary, this is the story of two souls, heavy with pride, that come together in order to overcome a darkness that will threaten every semblance of peace they've come to know and appreciate.
