“Sorry,” Caitlyn breathes out, door clicking shut behind her. Vi doesn’t open her eyes, just listens to the way Caitlyn advances towards the tub carefully, gently, almost as if she were afraid to spook her. “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting for too long.”
“No worries,” Vi replies, voice barely above a murmur, fingers digging in so hard against the porcelain it begins to hurt. “I only waited six months, no big deal, cupcake.”
Caitlyn sighs, sits by the side of the tub, “Vi–”
“Save it,” Vi looks up at her, eyes suddenly feeling– heavy. She knows, though, any attempt at sleeping will be futile; she’s been restless in the absence of her salve.“I don’t wanna talk about it, right now.”

And when Caitlyn reached out and her fingers stroked Vi’s cheek with the greatest gentleness anyone had ever touched her with, when Vi reached up instinctively and caught her fingers and held them close, something clicked into place. Vi looked up at Caitlyn, and she saw something warm in her eyes, and she couldn’t move, could barely breathe as Caitlyn sat up and leaned over her and brushed her hair back with gentle fingertips and kissed her.

And even as Caitlyn tried her best to distract her - getting Sevika to spar with her, taking her down to Jericho’s for mid-week impromptu dates, praising the work she was getting done with the Firelights until she blushed and couldn’t hide a smile - there was always something dark hovering, shadowing the corners of Vi’s smiles; sometimes further away, sometimes breathing down her nape. The weight of it loomed. Vi seemed used to its presence, but Caitlyn swore it only grew bolder - like it was merely sharpening its teeth while biding its time.
No one else could see it, but Caitlyn could. Vi’s left eye kept twitching whenever it was close by.
(Or: Caitlyn and Vi are working hard to rebuild Piltover and Zaun after the war. But when Caitlyn finds out the truth about Vi's time in Stillwater, the two cities are forced to reckon with the past if they want to carve out a future.)
